Special characteristics of the region

The Black Forest, or Schwarzwald, is famed for its thick, evergreen forests and picturesque vistas, making it a prime camping destination. Here, campers can settle among the pines and firs, finding peace in the forest's calm and rejuvenating energy. This region is not only a haven for nature lovers but also for those fascinated by folklore and tradition, with its clock-making villages and half-timbered houses.

Places to visit

Don't miss the opportunity to visit Triberg Waterfalls, Germany's highest waterfalls, which illuminate beautifully at night. Explore the serene Titisee and Schluchsee lakes for water sports and leisure. The open-air museum of Vogtsbauernhof offers insights into 400 years of Black Forest history, showcasing traditional architecture and crafts and the historic cities of Freiburg and Baden-Baden are also worth a visit.

Activities

The Black Forest is a playground for adventure, offering hiking and cycling on well-marked trails such as the Westweg, one of Germany’s oldest long-distance paths. Thermal baths, like those in Baden-Baden, provide relaxation after a day of exploration. Families will also find many attractions here, such as the Europa-Park in Rust and the Affenberg Salem. Winter transforms the Feldberg, the highest peak, into a snowy wonderland.

Events, festivals and traditions

Particularly recommended is the Tent Music Festival in Freiburg, which has attracted thousands of visitors for many years with its colorful music and cultural program. Likewise the well-known Schützenfest in Freiburg, the wine festival in Baden-Baden and the Seenachtsfest at Lake Titisee. Art lovers get their money's worth at the ArtWalk in Alpirsbach. And those who like it sportier should not miss the Freiburg Mountain Bike Festival or the Black Forest Ultra Bike Marathon.

Best time to travel

The Black Forest is captivating year-round, but the best times for camping are late spring to early autumn (May to September), when the weather is mild, and the landscape is lush and green. There is always a campsite free for nature lovers and even during winter, which is often free of snow, it is a good time to visit.

Regional specialities

The cuisine of the Black Forest is hearty and rustic, with dishes like Schwarzwälder Schinken (smoked ham), Flammkuchen (German pizza), and, of course, the world-renowned Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte (Black Forest gateau). Local breweries and distilleries offer a taste of traditional beers and schnapps. Or try the Baden wine if you get tired of the beer.
